Stopping Springtime Sports Injuries: Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic Ultrasound for muscle pain nycFor the athletes who are just getting warmed up for the spring that’s right around the corner (keep your fingers crossed that we don’t get any more snow!), this is an exciting time. Outdoor sports and leisure is just more fun when you don’t have to be all bundled up and freezing.

One of the things that I see a lot at Living Well Medical, my office in Downtown Manhattan, is an increase in sports injuries like muscle strains and sprained ligaments. Sometimes people forget to give themselves time to shake off the rust, but there are innumerable reasons people get hurt this time of year.

For those patients, we have recently integrated a diagnostic technology into our office that allows for more accurate understanding of soft tissue problems. Ultrasound is definitely a word you’ve heard in the medical world before but maybe never knew it could be applied to understanding musculoskeletal pain and injuries.

Similar to the way that an ultrasound let’s a new mother and father see the developing child in the womb, ultrasonography can give a doctor important visual information about soft tissue injuries.

Basically, an ultrasound works by sending sound waves through body tissues that are reflected by them and collected by a special device. These signals are then interpreted and displayed on the monitor for study. Injuries to the muscles, tendons and ligaments can all be investigated and identified by an experienced ultrasound technician or doctor.

We regularly use ultrasounds in our office to help athletes and non-athletes alike get a diagnosis for chronic soft tissue pain or acute injuries. If you have a nagging injury that’s keeping you from the sports and activities you love, give Living Well Medical in Downtown Manhattan a call at 212-645-8151. We’re here to help if you are in pain!
